Differences & Our Unique Features
Q.
What is the difference between Ninjaya and other major rickshaw services?
We do not prioritize volume or standard sightseeing. Driven by our philosophy to “co-create unforgettable memories,” our highly trained professionals provide bespoke routes and deep cultural insights tailored entirely to your interests.
Furthermore, our strong partnerships with local communities and businesses allow us to arrange exclusive experiences beyond the rickshaw ride—such as private viewings of hidden temples or special arrangements at historic teahouses. This comprehensive support for a luxurious Kyoto journey is what sets us apart.
*If you require special arrangements, please consult with us at least one month prior to your desired date to allow for meticulous preparation.
For more about our philosophy, please read Our Story (About).
Q.
What kind of guides do you have? Can I request a specific guide?
Under our corporate philosophy of respecting individuality, we have a diverse team of passionate guides (both male and female) who offer genuine, human-centric hospitality rather than reading from a manual.
Many of our guides interact directly with guests via Instagram and are supported by returning fans. Requesting a specific guide is completely free (included in the tour price). Feel free to find a guide that matches your vibe on our social media and nominate them when booking.
Q.
Do you offer tours in English or other foreign languages?
We can arrange guides who can deeply explain Kyoto’s history and culture in English and other languages. Our services are highly rated by inbound travelers and for hosting important VIP guests from overseas.
There is no extra charge for a foreign language guide. Please make sure to mention “English guide requested” when making your reservation.
Reservations, Pricing & Payment
Q.
Are there any hidden fees or additional charges later on? Is tipping required?
The tour price includes the guide fee, photography services, and all taxes. We do not engage in opaque sales tactics. Our focus is purely on ensuring you enjoy a special Kyoto experience. Tipping is not customary in Japan and is not required.
Furthermore, our rickshaws are uniquely “custom-built in-house.” We designed and manufactured them from scratch, prioritizing passenger comfort, visibility, and safety over cost reduction. We offer overwhelming value at a fair price.
Q.
What is the pricing for a single passenger?
We calculate prices per rickshaw (not just per person). One rickshaw can accommodate up to two adults.
If you use one rickshaw spaciously by yourself, a discounted solo rate applies. Enjoy a luxurious private time while your guide acts as your dedicated photographer and companion.
Q.
How does pricing work for children or infants?
Due to safety regulations, children aged 6 and older (elementary school age) are counted as adults and require their own seat.
• Rickshaw 1: 1 Adult + 1 Child (over 6)
• Rickshaw 2: 1 Adult + 1 Infant (on lap)
We provide secure seatbelts so the whole family can enjoy the ride safely.
Q.
Where should we go on the day? Is an advance reservation required?
However, guests with reservations are given priority, so you may have to wait during busy times. You can book online up to 30 minutes before your ride. We highly recommend booking in advance for a smooth experience.
Q.
What if we are running late for our reservation?
We will wait for you as long as possible, but depending on the next reservation, we may have to shorten your tour time (the original booking fee will still apply).
Kyoto traffic can be heavy, especially during tourist seasons, so please allow plenty of time to arrive at the meeting point.
Q.
What is your cancellation policy? Can I change the date or time?
- Up to 2 days before: Free
- 1 day before: 50% of the tour fee
- Day of the tour / No-show: 100% of the tour fee
*If we have to cancel the tour due to severe weather for safety reasons, you will receive a full refund.
Changing the time on the same day or extending the tour during the ride is free of charge if the guide’s schedule permits. Please consult with us.
Q.
What payment methods do you accept? Can I use a credit card?
You can pay using major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, etc.), IC transit cards, and major QR code payments (Alipay, WeChat Pay, PayPay, etc.).
Q.
Can you issue a receipt?
Whether you pay online in advance or on-site, your guide can provide a handwritten receipt at the end of the ride.
Routes & Tour Details
Q.
How long of a tour do you recommend for first-timers?
A rickshaw is not just a means of transport. During the tour, you can stop to explore shrines and temples, take beautiful photos, or even grab a coffee “drive-thru” style.
With 2 hours, you won’t feel rushed and can fully immerse yourself in the true essence of Kyoto. It is our most highly rated and satisfying course.
Q.
Can I customize the route to visit specific places?
Let us know your requests, such as “I want to get off at this shrine” or “Can we stop by that cafe?” Our guides will build the optimal bespoke route for you.
Even if we can’t fit everything into the booked time, our guides will give you clear directions and advice on how to visit them afterward.
Q.
Can we get off the rickshaw during the tour to explore temples or shop?
You can get off the rickshaw to visit historical sites or go shopping along the route.
If you wish, our guides can accompany you as a walking guide to provide deep historical context. *Please note that the time spent exploring or waiting is included in your total tour time.
Q.
Can you pick us up at our hotel or a restaurant?
While we generally ask guests to meet at our main spots, we can bring the rickshaw directly to the entrance of our partner hotels or high-end Ryotei (restaurants).
Pickups at other locations may also be possible depending on traffic regulations. Additional pickup/transfer fees may apply depending on the distance. If you wish to arrange a surprise pickup, please contact us in advance.
Q.
What are your operating hours? Do you offer early morning or night tours?
Early morning tours (when the streets are quiet and serene) and night tours (during magical illumination events) are incredibly popular as exclusive, reservation-only plans.
If you wish to book a tour outside regular hours, please add a note to your booking form or contact us.
Comfort, Safety & Amenities
Q.
Do rickshaws ride on the street? Is it safe? Is the ride bumpy?
Riding on sidewalks is not permitted, but there is no danger. Only staff who have cleared strict safety standards and practical training operate the rickshaws. We select the safest routes, fully understanding Kyoto’s complex traffic.
Furthermore, our custom-built rickshaws feature modern suspension that absorbs bumps from cobblestones and roads. The ride is surprisingly smooth and stable, meaning motion sickness is extremely rare.
Q.
What if it rains or snows? Or if it’s too hot or cold?
During rain or snow, we deploy a waterproof roof and a special rain cover, so you won’t get wet. Wet cobblestones actually create a beautiful, atmospheric backdrop for photos.
In winter, we wrap you in thick blankets and provide disposable heating pads, making the ride “warmer than expected.” In summer, the roof provides shade, and we intentionally choose breezy, cooler routes.
*If we determine that running the tour is unsafe due to severe weather (e.g., a typhoon), we will cancel the tour and provide a full refund.
Q.
Will you take photos for us during the tour?
Our guides are also dedicated photographers who know Kyoto’s scenery inside out. We will take you to the best photo spots where the light and background are perfect, capturing professional-level angles.
We guarantee photos you’ll cherish forever. Sharing them on social media is highly encouraged!
Q.
Can we grab coffee or food to go during the tour?
You can stop at cafes or shops along the way. However, since purchasing time is included in the tour duration, we recommend this only for tours of 60 minutes or longer.
We also have special arrangements with partner cafes. Please consult with your guide beforehand or on the day.
Q.
Can we bring our own drinks or snacks on the rickshaw?
You can drink water or other beverages at any time during the ride.
As for food, we ask that you avoid items with strong odors or soups that might spill, but light snacks or sweets are perfectly fine.
Q.
What if I need to use the restroom during the tour?
We know the locations of clean public restrooms and partner facilities along the route. Please don’t hesitate to let your guide know.
Luggage, Attire & Accessibility
Q.
Can you accommodate large suitcases or baby strollers?
Our rickshaws have a dedicated space on the back. We can securely tie down foldable strollers or carry-on to medium-sized suitcases during the ride.
For oversized luggage, we can store it at our main garage, or arrange delivery to your endpoint (consult in advance).
Q.
Can we ride in Kimono or Yukata? Can you recommend rental shops?
Our staff will carefully assist you when getting on and off to ensure your kimono or yukata does not lose its shape. Riding a rickshaw in traditional attire creates stunning, authentic Kyoto photos.
We partner with several high-quality kimono rental shops and can guide you to the best option based on your needs.
Q.
Can pregnant women or wheelchair users take a ride?
Pregnant guests: If you are in your stable period and feel well, you can ride. We will choose flat routes with fewer bumps to minimize any physical strain.
Wheelchair users: We provide a special step stool and staff assistance for safe boarding. Foldable wheelchairs can be tied to the back of the rickshaw. Please consult with us in advance for smooth arrangements.
Q.
Is there a weight limit? Can two large adults ride together?
Our custom rickshaws have wider seats than standard models, so larger guests can sit comfortably.
If you have safety concerns regarding the weight limit, our staff will check on the day, and we may suggest taking two separate rickshaws if necessary.
Q.
Can we ride with our pets?
Up to 2 small pets can ride with you in one rickshaw. For safety and out of consideration for other guests, please use a leash or a pet carrier/sling.
Special Occasions & VIP Hosting
Q.
Can you arrange concierge services for a proposal, anniversary, or VIP hosting based on our budget?

For proposals and anniversaries, our dedicated concierge will meticulously plan everything—from timing the delivery of a bouquet to scouting quiet, scenic spots. Depending on your budget, we can even customize the rickshaw itself (e.g., bespoke seat fabrics or personalized lanterns).
